The cold, wet season begins in November at the latest. Everything often seems gray on gray. It gets dark early and light late. This then continues until February. For me, this is a time when I often use my car instead of my bike. I'm not a fair-weather cyclist, but I'm not an all-weather cyclist either. Because of my height, I deliberately chose a large, high car. This offers me many pleasant advantages. Getting in is particularly easy on my back. Loading and unloading shopping is also much more comfortable than in a lowered vehicle. The good visibility in traffic is another advantage.
There are certainly some great small cars out there, but rather than squeezing myself into, say, a Smart, which ideally has an opening roof so I can look up above , I'd rather opt for the larger models. A large car is definitely a plus for my leg length alone.
Bicycle or chrome horse
I feel the same way about my bike. I ride a model with an extra-large frame. A regular adult bike looks like the classic "monkey on a grindstone" on me. My legs are too long for too little bike. My posture and riding style are rather semi-professional.
It's similar with motorcycles. I'm a passionate motorcyclist. My heart actually lies with choppers. I've ridden one myself. The roadholding of these bikes is completely different than that of street bikes. My height was rather suboptimal for the shiny chrome horse. An enduro, on the other hand, has a good height and is a good choice for long legs. Ultimately, of course, it all depends on what kind of riding experience you like.
Scooter or roller skates
My newest mode of transportation is an e-scooter. I actually belong to the group of people who use these two-wheeled e-vehicles to quickly whizz from point A to point B. For my 1.86 m (5'1") height, the scooter is perfectly suitable, but anyone over 2 m (6'1") tall will probably have trouble maintaining good posture. Environmentally friendly, but not the best way to get around (and around) in terms of physical activity.
Inline skates or disco scooters are also a great alternative. I love cruising along waterfront paths on my disco scooters in bright sunshine. One of the most relaxing ways for me. You're probably wondering why disco scooters and not inline skates, they're so much faster. That's true, but I used to roller skate a lot as a child. When I put on one of those four-wheeled models for the first time in about 35 years, that feeling from back then immediately came back.
Sure, the first few rides were a bit wobbly and awkward, but it still felt incredibly good. As a tall person, you're quite an imposing figure when you're on roller skates. Your actual height immediately increases by another five to 10 cm within a few seconds of putting them on.
There are many ways to travel. And for us tall people, finding the right mode of transportation for our size is always an additional challenge. But thankfully, there are now suitable alternatives for all types of mobility, both tall and short.
Wishing you a safe journey
